Parents http://www.pedseast.com/parents en-us Sat, 25 May 2013 02:30:07 -0500 Letter to Our Parents http://www.pedseast.com/parents/lettertoourparents Dear Parents:

As parents, we all desire the best for our children - the best family situation, the best education and the best medical care.  The trend of health care delivery, not only in the local Memphis area but also nationally, is concerning.  The concept of the "medical home" has always been at the heart of the practice of medicine.  Continuity of care is undeniably critical to providing high-quality health care, providing more in-depth understanding and knowledge of your child's health needs beyond what is obtained in a single limited visit (at an outside walk-in clinic).  Despite this, we continue to see an increase of walk-in clinics in retail outlets throughout our area.  We are concerned by the repeated examples of what appear to be disjointed care of an isolated problem and resulting treatments that do not integrate with your child's overall medical needs.  This often results in duplication of tests and treatments with increased expense for your family.

The physician and staff of Pediatrics East pledge to provide the best possible care for your child throughout their young lives.  We are available 24 hours a day by phone and our offices are open seven days a week.  We offer an early morning sick clinic Monday through Friday, an evening clinic Monday through Thursday, Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon sick clinics to care for your child's emergent needs.  We offer same day appointments for sick and well children, take care of simple and complex problems and we are all board certified pediatricians.  We do not try to be everything to everyone, but we do try to be the best at what we do.

We hope to enjoy a long-standing relationship with your family and we appreciate your loyalty.

The Physicians of Pediatrics East

Attention Parents of 7th and 9th graders http://www.pedseast.com/parents/attentionparentsof7thand9thgraders To parents of junior high students:

Your son or daughter is entering a very exciting phase of their development.  They are making a transition from a child to a young adult.  This is a very important time to stay connected with your pediatrician.  Not only do their bodies go through amazing changes needing routine careful examination and guidance with expected development, but their psychological development goes through incredible changes as well.  We are here to offer guidance and support as both you and they go through these changes.

9thgrader.pngMany of these teenagers are involved in sports and other extracurricular activities.  We are here to help you make sure that they engage in these activities safely and maintain their health as well as their academics.  If they are participating in any school sports, the school will require an annual physical examination and sports form to be completed.  They also will need updated vaccinations.  Typically junior high students will need to have a tetanus booster, meningitis shot, probably a hepatitis A vaccine, and a second chickenpox vaccine if they have not already done so.  In addition, a vaccine for HPV for the prevention of cervical cancer is highly recommended.

We look forward to seeing you and your teenager as they go through this exciting phase.

Dr. Edwards
